Match Reports
Burley Trojans 4 – 1 Churwell Lions
Whilst we lost the first league match of the season, every player put in a fantastic effort and the result could easily have gone the other way.
Playing uphill in hot conditions,we had the better of the first half.Burley’s keeper saved a low shot from Lauren with her legs & Ellie almost scored with a volley from a cross from Jenny.
Despite losing her boot,Jenny beat 2 defenders and had a shot turned around the post for a corner. With both boots back on,she then cut in from the right wing and beat the keeper with a low shot to give us a well deserved lead, which lasted until first half injury time when a Burley break brought the equaliser.
A cross to the back post early in the second half led to Burley’s second however no one’s head went down as we continued to press forward.Jenny went close with 2 more long range efforts,Ellie had 1 cleared off the line and another that the keeper somehow managed to save between her knees.
Emily played well in goal and set up many of our attacks with her long kicks.Amy covered every blade of grass in midfield and behind her Chelsea tackled everything that moved. Olivia cleared off the line from a Burley corner before Chelsea almost equalised from a near post corner of our own.
Two quick goals, both on the break put the result beyond doubt but there was still time for Amy to have a shot tipped over the bar and then put another just wide of the post.Olivia sprinting the length of the field for a last minute corner and then all the way back again to get back in position summed up the effort the entire team put in.
Chelsea was voted player of the match by Burley’s coach but it could have been any 1 of 3 or 4 players. As she broke the trophy within a minute, maybe it should have been (only joking Chels.)
Churwell Lions 3 – 1 Wrenthorpe Rangers
Another hard working performance was eventually rewarded with a well deserved victory.
We had all the early possession and could have already been 2 goals up before Wrenthorpe scored with their first attack after 8 minutes.Jenny then had a shot cleared off the line almost straight from the kick off,Kristi went close after a cross from Amy,Chelsea shot just wide,Jenny headed over and then hit the post with a shot from the edge of the box.
Just when it looked as though we would never score,Chelsea took a perfect near post corner that the keeper could only help into the net under pressure from Kristi.Lauren almost gave us the lead with a shot from 25 yards and whilst the half time score was only 1 -1 it was easily the best 35 minutes of football we’d played all season.
Wrenthorpe came back into the match in the second half forcing several corners but concentration and determination in defence and midfield restricted them to long range efforts, with Emily doing well to tip their best attempt over the bar.
At the other end,Kristi went close with a shot on the turn after a through ball from Nicole before Jenny broke clear from the right and fired low into the bottom corner.Chelsea almost doubled the lead with a header from a corner and Jenny finally put the result beyond doubt, chipping the keeper from outside the box.
Jenny was voted player of the match by Wrenthorpe’s coach but once again there were plenty of good performances to choose from.Olivia probably had her best game for the club in defence and Ellie did well in midfield, causing problems in attack and always being available to help out at the back.
Churwell Lions 8 – 0 Howden Clough
Whilst this was a fantastic result, what is more important is that we played the best football we have ever played with some great passing and movement and real teamwork in every area of the pitch.
We attacked from the first whistle and Ellie caused all sorts of problems down the right, creating 3 early chances for Jenny and Kristi.Jenny then opened the scoring after 8 minutes, with a low shot after being put through by Amy.Ellie got the goal her recent performances have deserved 5 minutes later, beating the keeper from close range and Amy added a third with a shot from just inside the Howden half.Jenny scored the fourth, beating 3 defenders and then shooting high into the net and Amy made it 5- 0 with a run and shot from the right hand side of the box.
Jenny and Chelsea both went close at the start of the second half before Amy completed her hat trick, turning in a cross after Nicole,Ellie and Jenny had combined for the best move of the game.Jenny then got her third, giving the keeper no chance from the edge of the box.
Howden never gave up,Chelsea and Olivia both had to make important tackles and Emily did well to race off her line to make a clearance when we were caught on the break.
We continued to create chances at the other end and Nicole completed the scoring, being in the right place at the right time to get to the rebound first, after a shot from Chelsea was well saved.Howden then had their best spell of the match but good work from Emily ensured a clean sheet.
Amy was voted Player of the Match by Howden’s coach.Congratulations to Ellie and Nicole for their first goals for the team.
Idle Juniors 1 - 5 Churwell Lions
Despite the scoreline, this was a very competitive match and once again every player put in a tremendous effort against a very physical team.
We took the lead after 5 minutes when Kristi dribbled through the centre of the Idle defence and then around the keeper to put the ball into an empty net. With the advantage of playing downhill and us having to reorganise after Kristi had gone off injured,Idle had plenty of attacks and Chelsea and Olivia both made important tackles and forced the attackers wide to keep any danger away from our box.
We then began to control the game.Amy won control of the centre of midfield and Ellie created a series of chances from wide on the right.Jenny had been causing all sorts of problems up front and Idle’s defenders couldn’t get near her as she controlled a throw in and beat 2 players before firing past the keeper to make it 2-0.
The second half started as the first had finished with us attacking and Amy,Jenny and Chelsea all went close.Idle scored on the break from one of our corners but Jenny put us 3 -1 up almost immediately, after she intercepted an Idle throw in and gave their keeper no chance with her finish.
Emily caught every single cross into our box, turned their best effort over the bar for a corner and set up plenty of attacks with her kicks.Chelsea swapped positions with Jenny to join Nicole in attack and with Ellie always being available out wide, we once again began to dominate.
Despite playing in defence,Jenny completed her 2nd hat trick of the season, shooting low into the net after running through the entire defence and she then got her fourth with a spectacular shot from just inside the Idle half.
Jenny was voted Player of the Match by Idle’s coach.
Churwell Lions 0 – 11 Kirkburton
Every team is entitled to have a bad game and this was certainly ours.
There’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves. We’ve played really well as a team all season and we’ve just got to put this one behind us and get back to playing like we can do.Steve thinks more sit ups should do the trick.
There were actually some positives to come out of the game.Georgia played really well on her debut, was deservedly named Player of the Match and her speed up front is something that we can hopefully use to our advantage in the games to come.
So heads up,forget it and let’s all start again next week.
Scissett 3 - 5 Churwell Lions
This was the ideal response to last week’s defeat, with every player contributing to a well deserved but hard earned victory.
Scissett took the lead after 8 minutes when Emily got her hands to a corner but we were too slow to react to the loose ball.Jenny equalised almost immediately, chasing after a goal kick from Emily before hammering the ball into the net.Having got back into the game,we then made it difficult for ourselves again by conceding a goal identical to Scissett’s first.
Ellie made a chance for her self and was unlucky not to score after battling for the ball on the left and Kristi and Jenny both shot just over the bar.Jenny then equalised when the Scissett keeper could only deflect her cross into the net.
We fell behind for the 3rd time to a low shot against the run of play but again we responded quickly,Amy had a shot blocked from a corner and Jenny then completed her hat trick, beating the keeper after a through ball from Nicole.
Lauren took over in goal from Emily for the second half and she dealt confidently with anything that came into the box.Olivia and Chelsea gave her great protection, tackling and blocking everything and with the exception of a couple of dangerous crosses, restricted Scissett to a handful of long shots.Amy took control of the middle of midfield and once Georgia had scored her first goal for the club, turning in a near post corner,we never looked like losing the lead.
Ellie,Jenny,Amy and Georgia all had further chances to score but Emily finally made the game safe by setting Jenny up for a shot that the keeper couldn’t hold and then following in to tuck away the rebound.
Once again there were 2 or 3 candidates but Olivia was deservedly voted Player of the Match
Churwell Lions 5 – 2 Wortley FC
As we started the game in 3rd place in the League, above Wortley on goal difference only, this was our most important victory of the season so far.
Playing into the wind and rain in the 1st half,we started slowly and despite Lauren doing well to make a save after Wortley’s best player had run through the centre of our defence, the rebound ran loose and ended up in the back of our net.
We got back into the game straight away however, with Jenny hitting the bar with a shot from the left and then shooting just wide after linking up well with Ellie. The equaliser came after 15 minutes with Ellie again putting a great ball through the middle of Wortley’s defence which Jenny stuck passed their keeper.Jenny then made it 2 -1 with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net but Wortley equalised just before half time with a tap in after the ball had hit the post.
We started the 2nd half much better than the 1st and Emily was unlucky not to score after being set up by Amy and Kristi. We then took a 3-2 lead when a Wortley defender could only turn a cross from Chelsea into her own net.
Nicole,Olivia,Kristi and Chelsea all tackled well as we began to control the game and Lauren dealt confidently with any shots that got through. At the other end,Amy shot over the bar and Georgia had a shot well saved after her speed had taken her past the entire Wortley defence.
Emily made it 4-2,scoring from close range after a pass from Jenny and Jenny then completed her hat trick with her best goal of the game, running from the half way line and beating the keeper with ease.
In a game where every player contributed to the result,Jenny was voted player of the match
Howden Clough 1 - 6 Churwell Lions
On a cold, wet , horrible day it was important to get off to a good start and we attacked from the kick off.Ellie scored our first after 2 minutes, beating the keeper with a low shot from Jenny’s pass and Emily made it 2 - 0, forcing the ball home after Howden failed to clear a corner. Ellie,Jenny and Kristi all then went close as only Howden’s keeper kept them in the game.
We then got a bit carried away, too often leaving ourselves short in defence and we could well have been caught out if Olivia and Nicole hadn‘t both made important interceptions when they were outnumbered at the back. Having said that, everyone deserves credit for sticking at it in the conditions and it’s easy to criticise others from under 4 layers of clothes.
Jenny got our third, after a through ball from Amy and Chelsea almost made it 4 after she reacted first to a long kick out from Lauren, who didn‘t have a save to make in the first half.
Howden started the second half brightly, creating more chances in the first 5 minutes than they had in the entire first half and it was no more than they deserved when they pulled 1 back. With Amy playing in front of the back 2 , we started to defend more solidly. Georgia and Ellie could then push forward up the wings setting up chances for Jenny and Emily. Jenny then scored the goal of the game, cutting in from the right and hitting an unstoppable shot that went in off the bar. She completed her hat trick with a run from the half way line and then completed the scoring, with a low shot from Amy’s through ball.
Amy was voted Player of the Match
West Riding Girls Football League U13 Shield
Wortley FC 0 - 6 Churwell Lions
An excellent team performance saw us to progress to the quarter finals of the Shield.
Jenny scored the first after 5 minutes with a neat finish after Chelsea won a tackle in midfield and played a ball through the middle of the home side’s defence.Wortley responded well,Lauren had to be alert to turn a shot a around the post for a corner and Olivia made a fantastic tackle when their striker seemed bound to score. We continued to attack however and Jenny,Georgia and Kristi all came close to doubling the lead.
The 2nd goal finally came shortly after half time when Jenny was tackled having run through the home defence and Georgia curled the loose ball wide of the keeper. Ellie was unlucky not to make it 3 when she ran the length of the field out of defence, but just failed to get on the end of Jenny’s cross and Amy also shot narrowly wide after a strong run through the middle.
Emily scored the third within seconds of coming on as sub and Jenny quickly added a fourth, turning in a cross from Amy.Emily scored her second with a close range effort before Jenny completed the scoring and yet another hat trick, with a left footed shot into the corner of the net after Nicole had done well to win the ball in midfield.
Amy was voted Player of the Match.
